Samsung jumps into the metaverse and launches a virtual store in Decentraland

  • Samsung is the latest global giant to enter the metaverse, launching a virtual version of its flagship physical store in New York in Decentraland.
  • The virtual experience allows users to access Samsung’s booth at the ongoing CES show or even participate in a party hosted by DJ Gamma Vibes.

The metaverse is here, and another global giant is in pursuit of this new virtual world. Samsung is the latest multinational to announce a metaverse project, choosing Decentraland for its flagship metaverse effort. The consumer electronics giant launched a virtual version of its iconic physical store in New York, which aims to promote customer engagement at a time when a new version of COVID-19 is driving people away from physical stores.

The physical store that Samsung has emulated in the metric is located at 837 Washington Street, in the New York Meat Packing District, Manhattan. It will now be in the metaverse as the Samsung 837X for a limited time.

Samsung is serious and has not charged any cost for its launch in the metric. In a statement, the Korean company said its store is «one of the largest brand name land acquisitions in Decentraland history.» In your virtual repository, you will offer your users three options: Connectivity Theater, Sustainability Forest and Custom Stage.

The Connectivity Theater will primarily focus on the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to be held in Las Vegas, showcasing new Samsung products and product launches at the event.

Those who choose the Forest of Sustainability will get that experience, a digital experience in conservation. Samsung recently partnered with Veritree, a Cardano-based platform that allows users to pay for ADA and then cast a tree for each token. Samsung plans to plant two million trees by the end of the first quarter of the year.

Then there’s the Custom Stage, a virtual experience that will undoubtedly be the most fun. It will feature «the company’s first meta-versa mixed reality live dance party, hosted by the brilliant producer, DJ and vibraphonist, Gamma Vibes, from Samsung’s physical location 837.»

Samsung, which is the company that sells the world’s largest smartphones, but surpasses Huawei and Apple, is excited about its meta-reverse adventure. In a statement, Michelle Crossan-Matos, Samsung Electronics America’s senior vice president of corporate communications and marketing, said:

The metaverse allows us to transcend physical and spatial boundaries to create unique virtual experiences that would not otherwise exist. Innovation is in our DNA, and we can’t wait for all of you to experience the virtual world in full bloom.

However, not everyone was impressed. The Verge called the project unnecessary, saying «no one asked Samsung for this metaverse experience.» In particular it’s not the target audience that the company’s press release said it was targeting: millennials and zoomers.
